A wonderful Wednesday morning to the entire IBD Live International Team from Minneapolis! |
Good morning, Scott! |
‘Morning! |
Welcome back, Blaine! |
hey chris GM are you in AAXN still? and can we look at INSP? |
Still in both. We’ll take a look. |
Good morning. Freddie on trumpet? |
Not sure. Herbie Hancock on piano. |
Awesome choice of music! Good morning |
One of my favorites. |
Kudos to Hatman et al who write the Stock Market Today post market review and analysis……it is an insightful wrap up every day and is much appreciated…..Jeff Newman |
There’s a pretty decent brain under that hat. (From Hat Man: Jeff, big shout out to Ed Carson, Alan Elliott, Scott Lehtonen, Nancy Gondo, Michael Larkin, Rachel Fox and Juan Carlos Arancibia as members of the markets team who truly put in a lot of hard work into the Stock Market Today! Pls follow them on Twitter too! @IBD_Aelliott @IBD_Ngondo @IBD_Mlarkin et al) |
I feel like a need a glass of bourbon with this music and low my lights |
Surprised the panelists didn’t decide on that themselves. |
Can we look at PLTR and FTCH today? Also are AMD and NVDA still a buy at this point? |
live answered |
Good morning IBD. Can you comment on the chart for APPS? How does this look for an add-on to an existing position around 56? Thanks. |
I like the setup of this pullback in isolation but Chris rightly pointed out that this has already a multi-fold move. |
Nice tunes, GM! |
Another great choice by Chris! |
ETSY – trying to figure out why it popped… Will defer to “Ours is Not to Reason Why, Ours is But to Interpret and Buy”! |
Nice words Blaine |
Good morning everyone |
Hey Kulwant |
GM IBD |
GM Pinchas |
what do you guys think of FCX, X, and XOM ? |
All three are extended now from proper buy points but if you own them, they’re acting great |
Love the music selection. Jazz, yes! |
It’s becoming a trend! |
Question about the HTMMIS book. Is the green edition the same as the orange edition? |
There is a bonus chapter in the green edition and a DVD that comes with it. |
can you help me find the FAQs? and other content….. |
Hi! Check out investors.com/LiveFAQ — a ton of content over there! |
Good Morning- thank you guys for being there during all of these extreme times. Helps me stay in. |
Very nice Nancy! Thanks for this |
No way. I’m going for an old rhum ;p |
Ah, we like rums too, Edouard! 🙂 Hatman |
Where has Ken Shreve been?? |
On vacation/out sick! |
NVDA kills me. I am not buying it ever again:) |
It sure is just ambling along, even during CES week! Let’s see how it finishes for the week. |
GM, love the Jazz ! btw, what was that song and artist ? |
GM Victor! Chris chose this one, Cantaloupe Island, the 1999 Remastered, by Herbie Hancock. |
Can’t get to previoius IBD live videos (to get lists). Not sure if it is just me or a system issue. thanks |
We are working on a solution but this is an interim workaround: zoom in and then out again ( ctrl + on PC, command + in Mac). This will allow the archived episodes to be seen again. |
great everyone is here |
GM Paul |
Morning Team… |
Hey Fuz |
Please discuss IIVI |
Michael, IIVI has performed wonderfully. Since a move past two buy points — 48.10 in cup with handle, 53.07 as a cup entry — the gains have now reached 89%; you obviously would want to preserve at least some of that gain. The 8-week hold rule has passed. I think a big break below the 10-week MA would be a good defensive sell signal. Fundamentals look strong. Good FY 2021 (June) eps estimate and good for FY 2022 too. If you own this one, congrats! Hat Man Dave |
What are your thoughts on LMND? Can we talk about them? Thank You!! |
live answered |
ROKU…….is it actionable |
It’s too extended from its moving averages for a proper buy |

“Good morning |

Alissa, nice job on the call with the Sunrun and VanEck CEOs |
Appreciate this so much, Kulwant! |
AMD a concern this morning? |
live answered |
morning, thanks for great sessions and for all of your help! The Russian telecom y’all were discussing yesterday may have been Vimpel. Thanks again! |
That’s the one! |
Any idea what made AMD reverse after yesterday’s great start? |

GENERAC: BUY NOW OR WAIT FOR PULL BACK? |
It’s a bit too extended here for a new position |
IBD menioned UBER broke out of a base but I did not it see the base on pattern recognion. Why is thar? Did i miss something? |
Sometimes pattern recognition doesn’t pick up every pattern since it’s an algorithm |
Hi Irusha, do you know why the ownership tab on the android app does not show the names of A+ funds? There is always half a page of space and you are always mentioning the likes of T Rowe Price, Fidelity etc. It would be really useful to have this when one is not in front of the PC. Thanks |
Hi Martin, just haven’t had a chance to add it into the app yet. We’d like to eventually but we have a lot of other things to take care of first. |
g’day. can we look at ZM today? Its been in a downtrend but appears to show an upside reversal yesterday. Considering both the news of new offering capital raise and news reports of potentially being added to the S&P, would like to hear thoughts about the technicals and looking for potential entry points? Thanks! |
Good that its being held by 200-day moving average line but we are usually limiting our stocks to those above their 50-day moving average line. |
any news for AMD ? Dropped quite a bit at open ! |
Fairly sure AMD is falling on reports of CEO switch at Intel. INTC jumping on hopes that it can regain its edge vs. AMD – and perhaps TSM. |
what is everyone doing with AMD? |

good morning would you look at AMD pleas |
live answered |
Does it not concern you that the leading techs, i.e. AAPL, AMZN, FB etc are not leading but lagging for the overall market health? |
That’s putting pressure on the indexes but you have a lot of dynamic leaders that we are discussing that are providing better opportunities. |
Good Morning, Ali, Ed, Justin, Hatman, Irusha, Chris and all. Thanks for getting me into some stocks that I otherwise would not have been in. Best |
Good morning, T! Awesome to hear |
Good morning. PLTR gets cut to Sell by Citi and the stock is up? |

Alissa, for a poll answer could a future one be what morning routines are for preparing for the day? Except for Ed, who wakes up just too dang early 🙂 |
LOL. This is a good one, thanks! |
Where would one draw the Stop line w/ Unity? |
You could size it off the 10-week. Check out investors.com/LiveFAQ for a detailed article on position sizing and our position size calculator (excel document you can download for plug-and-play) |
U and CRSR are in the same business? Who’s the leader? |
One is software, one is hardware |
THANKS CITIGROUP FOR DOWNGRADE. PLTR IS UP FOR THE DAY |

PLTR up on a downgrade! |
live answered |
Irusha, On ONEM how can the Ownership add up to more than 100%? |
Mgmt % is % of Shares Outstanding. Funds % is a % if Float. |
Too late for entry into CRWD or an add to NET? Thanks |
CRWD yes, NET no. NET is about 2% above its 10-week line, while CRWD is over 20% above the 10-week (too extended) |
while youre touching base on plug – please touch FCEL too… earnings are here and there… what would have it moving as it is… |
live answered |
WSM — Excellent follow through day this morning — right through the buy zone! |
Agreed! |
PLTR shaking off the downgrade |
live answered |
Why is no one ever talking about GameStop! |
Because of the weak fundamentals. We’re planning the gaming industry in other ways — CRSR, U, graphics chip stocks, ETFs like HERO or ESPO, etc. |
SO SOULD I SELL PLUG |
Yes, at least some |
how did Chris change the scale on the chart…sorry |
On weekly changing Price Scale best fit to Price Scale standard and vice versa |
David Hat Man, yesterday you had showed us where to get the industry group rankings on IBD. How do we find the stocks that make up each industry grouping? |
In MarketSmith, if you go to the blue industry group link and then slide the right tab over and pick stocks in the group button. (Great Q: And, another way to find the top stocks in each industry group is to pick a company, put the ticker in IBD Stock Checkup; kinda roundabout method, but helpful for research! https://research.investors.com/ stock-checkup/ |
What is an idea trailing stop loss percentage? |
We don’t really use trailing stops. We have other sell rules instead that we use based on % gain/loss from the buy point, moving averages and other key support levels. Check out investors.com/LiveFAQ for more details! |
Can we discuss AMD’s price action today please? Thank you. Hello from Dubai, really enjoying the discussions going on. |

is MTCH actionable? |
Yes, it’s rebounding from the 21-day line on a daily and just above its 10-week line on a weekly. It has a 3wks tight with a 158.50 entry (though you might also look to 159.63 – just above the whole consolidation – as an entry. Lots of different ways to look at it. |

live answered |
Can you define the Float? |
Float = Shares Outstanding – Closely held by insiders. It’s what is “floating” out there for most people to trade. |
EXAS weak today |
Yes, but after big gains the prior two days. Looking fine. |
If you have a stock like AMD and are going to lighten up, should you sell your lowest cost basis shares and book profits (in tax deferred account) or sell high priced shares? |
Since it’s a tax deferred account it doesn’t really matter for your budget. But psychologically, Bill always used Last In First Out. Since he was always buying on the way up, if he made a mistake on later buys he would take that off and consider that he was holding his original purchases. |
Ed, do you still like ISRG? |
I do, but it’s not acting great. Trying to find support around the 21-day/10-week and around the prior buy point. Also has a 3wks tight that’s in the buy zone of the prior buy point. But, earnings are coming next week. |
If TSM goes up, do you think the entire semi industry will go up? |
Might be a good sign for customers such as AMD/AAPL/QCOM/NVDA, but hard to say. We already know what TSM’s sales are, so don’t know if earnings will be a b gi mover. Capital spending plans will be relevant for AMAT/LRCX/ASML etc. |
NARI – big upside move today; what to do? |
We discussed it earlier as an actionable stock — extending its gains now, be careful about buying too extended; we said you could size off the 21-day. It was 11% above that level at the time. It’s up another 3% since |
Is Costco a double bottom setup? |
For a true double bottom, the second leg down has to undercut the first |
Irusha, how many stocks are in your portfolio? I can’t help myself, buying a little bit of this and that, and now I have 30 positions, many “on the radar”! |
I have 8-10 main positions and a number of smaller positions to keep on the radar. I also have a number of portfolios and so I spread it around. I don’t recommend it. The best thing to do is focus on 8-10 positions. |
ABNB is it the right ipo base? |
Yes, working on an IPO base and already clearing some early entries from lower resistance levels in the base |
if you like LMND, see ROOT |
I’m always a little suspicious of a stock trading below its IPO price. |
IRUSHA — I did a “deep dive” into ABNB’s financials and they have done an outstanding job of cutting expenses . . . thus, I suspect once things turn around they will be well positioned. |
makes sense. that’s cool to hear. Thanks Peter. |

ok I have an idea for a future poll. I am really enjoying Irusha talk about his research on companies. While it might seem obvious, I would love for everyone to share their tips on doing company research. Not just looking at the website. Yeah, thats obvious, but what is the process you all take to do significant research on a company, and then what is your process for analysis – yes CAN SLIM, but interested in this conversation. ( : |
Thanks for this, Rachel! I think it’s a great idea. Making a note of this |
Irusha has been quiet about PTON? Still pedaling? |
yes I am using it. I stopped using it for a couple of months which was bad. I am back on again. getting too fat. |
Thanks Alissa. I tuned in late and missed that discussion. |
No worries! Thanks for joining us. You can always go back and watch that part of the archived episode later today, if you have the chance! 🙂 |
Irusha, the biologist in you should really appreciate what NVTA announced today with PACB |
Hi John, yeah it’s pretty exciting. So much innovation going on in genomics. |
I’m getting live video from your faces, but leaderboard display is frozen. |
Sorry to hear this, Siegfried! Maybe leave the meeting and rejoin? Would check your internet connection, and disconnect other devices from your network if you’re able to do so |
Justin, The Swingtraer chart of YTD performance has 2020 for the title, not 2021. Love Swing Trader |
Thanks for this, George! I’ve passed this along to our product team |
Allisa how about polling the panelist with questions suggested by the crowd? How many long term leaders do you have? What is your best sell rule? What was your best lesson learned in 2020? What is your goal for working on your trading in 2021. How do you track your trades? |
Yes, we’ve been crowdsourcing the questions (and a few that you’ve mentioned have been discussed in past episodes) — thanks for submitting these, I’ll add them to my list! |
Ali, thought of a possible survey question: how concentrated are you in a few stocks compared to diversified more broadly? In other words deep vs wide? |
Thanks for submitting! |
Nice analysis on FANG Dave |
live answered |
another good energy stock that has oil and gas reserves in Texas and New Mexico is Texas Pacific (TPL). Check it out. |
Thanks Samsung; this is thin on daily volume, but great weekly action. Nice RS Rating, good 2021 eps estimate. |
I recall David mentioning FANG last week and it has rocked up since |
live answered |
Is FANG buyable? |
Rod, IMHO, 60 is a key round number; see how the stock rallied to 60 in June, then corrected again? If it can hold around that level this time, trade tight, perhaps form a handle, then break out — this could be a new buy opp. Cheers, Hat Man Dave. https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/investing-after-a-market-deep-freeze-how-to-spot-the-bottoming-base/ and https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/the-basics-spot-traits-of-proper-handles-on-cup-patterns/ |

Let me pull a Dave Ryan and say that my beliefs don’t allow me to buy these oil drillers. Sin stocks. There are many funds who also won’t buy them. |
You are definitely not alone. Pls recall what I said about the amazing 2020 growth in ESG funds. I would bet none of these funds own drillers. And the chief of New York’s state pension has been very vocal against some of the integrated majors regarding sustainability reports. Thanks for sharing that. Hat Man Dave |

morn folks… DASH? |
H Edward, DASH is struggling to cross a 195.60 IPO base buy point and keep moving. This is very interesting action to me. It reminds me of the point in this Investor’s Corner. Will a handle form? Or a new base? Don’t know yet. Either way, the strength since the IPO at $102 is impressive. Chris. Your thoughts on AAXN? I bought it as it bounced off the 10 day |

Hat Man’s analysis on the energy companies was so helpful also! |
Thank you Rachel! Glad you’ve joined us! |
Friendly suggestion that statements like “oil and gas companies with a yield are confident about their finances” are not accurate. Historically, you guys have done a great job about rebuffing statements from your co-workers when they are not completely correct. Really respect when you quickly correct one another as everyone undestands you are coming up with these ideas on the go. |
Thanks for sharing. |

Can we look at ZM ? it is really moving todsy on its second offering, is this a good sign? |
Nice move, but still in a downtrend. |
Irusha, did the Peloton bike actually help you to loose some weight ? |
yes but it’s not the only thing that I do. The classes are excellent though for cardio. |
You guys keep all discussion light and sweet. Such discussion (fun around it) give me better start to my day irrespective of how my portfolio is doing on tht day. |
Haha glad to hear this, Prabhu! We like to sprinkle in some fun now and again |
‘@Irusha- I just watched the trading summit from 2015 on market smith..! amazing. Would love more trading summits to be added to the classic section for webinars!! Great content |
Hi Darren, cool to hear. Yeah that was a unique situation and different from the trading summits that we do now. We only did 2 of those but luckily we recorded one of them. The trading summits that we do now is the same in every city and a much more basic seminar. |
NARI – Thx!!! On the move |
You betcha |
Future topic could be examples of setups that didn’t work and watching stops do their job. |

have not heard anything about BYND this year? |
Since it’s now below the 200-day — not on our radar |
AAPL earnings coming. 14 days too close? |
Potentially still enough time to build a cushion |
What do you think about buying TTD here? |
That huge break of the 21-day is a big blemish on the chart, and was a sell signal. 50-day now turning into a potential resistance level |
what screen did you use to catch that reversal in Peloton or were just scrolling through chatts? How can I use Marketsmith to flag those types of days for me? |
Honestly, I don’t remember. I have a few screens that I run to help narrow down what I look at. But it usually comes down to looking through a few hundred charts a day and recognizing the right “look.” |
Ali;s stock from yesterday moving now |
Go NET |
Thanks Ally: that was wierd but leaving and joining worked. |
Glad to hear! |
I noticed that when I look at prices on a MSmith chart it no longer shows closing range? Am I missing a setting or some option to turn it back on? |
Turn on Pattern Rec. |
how do you set the alert on a mac after the line is drawn? |
Right click when you hover over the glowing line |
how do you turn off/on pattern rec? |
Click on the orange button to the left of the printer button |
Chris, another thing that can allow you to set the trendline alert is to go to the wrench and turn off real time and go to delayed while you put on the alert |
Good to know. |
Is there a way in MS to have an alert be audible in addition to email like a bell? |
You can set up push alerts on your phone with the marketsmith app. If your sound on your phone is on, you can get audio signal from alert |
can you have an alert on the android |
I can’t personally say since I have iPhone but we do have the app for both iPhone and android I’m pretty darn sure! |
“When do we get Alissa hosting again? she’s a natural. |
Hat man, Ed or Alissa. should be the starting three. |
Just a suggestion. They all keep the show flowing, which is what we need. : )” |
Thanks for this, Greg! I’ll be the host on Fridays moving forward. |
Just a comment – Maybe one day someone could do a quick discussion on all of the types of alerts, i.e., emails, push, text etc. across the entire IBD platform etc. … or maybe an article in Investors.com. |
Thanks for the suggestioin, Karl! |
Thank, Ali. Could you lmk how to draw the orange line alerts to? I think Chris just went over it but I missed it. |
Once you set the alert, it will turn orange |
it turns yellow but doesn’t give me the option to add the alert |
Hm even when you right click as you’re hovering over it when it’s yellow? |
yes exactly turns yellow but can’t add the alert |
